Rents in New York’s “rent stabilized” apartments can go up 7.25 percent.

The rent-increase vote comes at a time of growing concern about the ability of the middle class to afford to live in New York City. This month, researchers at New York University released a report finding that the number of apartments considered affordable to hundreds of thousands of moderate-income households, like those of starting firefighters and police officers, had plunged by nearly a fifth from 2002 to 2005.

The story doesn’t say how rent control solves that problem, but the report in The Times also mentioned:

ABC Trying to Kill PVR Ad Skipping July 7, 2006

tivo-thumb.jpgIt had to happen. TiVo makes it just too damn easy to skip over commercials, so now ABC is on the warpath, trying to persuade personal video recorder (PVR) manufacturers to add a “feature” that disables the ability to fast forward a digital video recording. ABC President of Advertising Sales Mike Shaw thinks this will not be a big deal for consumers, instantly revealing to all the world that he is a clueless moron.

Just how Shaw thinks he’s going to get PVR manufacturers to cooperate with this “request” is not revealed, but we’re certain there must be some serious arm-twisting going on behind the scenes. In the meantime, TiVo users, you’re probably aware that the following key combination will activate a hidden, semi-secret easter egg, a 30-second skip function: Select Play Select 3 0 Select. For a 60-second skip, just key in Select Play Select 3 0 Select. Just trying to be helpful.

Anyway, killing ad skipping? Let’s just see them try. The bastards! There would be a revolt, no question. – Charlie White

MTA Discovers the L Train Sucks July 7, 2006

The MTA has concluded that the L Train is swamped by all the new residents in Williamsburg and other Brooklyn neighborhoods it serves and that its $443 million fleet of high tech subway cars is too small to handle the crush. (Passenger load is up 16 percent just since 2000.) It wants to put older cars back in service, but all the track work its been doing to handle the new, high-tech, conductor-free trains doesn’t get along with old school trains. So, it has to do signal work first.

Next up: The MTA studies the G Train, discovers it bites even worse than the L and concludes it won’t know what the hell to do with thousands of new Greenpoint residents, except build a footbridge over Newtown Creek so they can walk to Long Island City and try to squeeze on the 7.

It appears that if you make any purchases using iTunes 6.0 (or, even without making any purchases use iTunes 6.0 for other Music Store activity which authorizes against your account, such as authorizing a new computer to play your music), from that point on you must use 6.0 — and then JHymn won’t work for you either. JHymn will have to learn how to perform the iTunes 6.0 protocol before this problem is likely to be fixed — so hang on, it could be a bit of a wait.

In the meantime, you may wish to delay upgrading to iTunes 6.0 so that you can continue to free your music until a new solution is found.
